Good Country People Essay Example for Free

Great Country People Essay This article will dive into the life of Flannery O’Connor as it is told anecdotally as well as her life relates and is emphasized in the narratives she composes. By utilizing O’Connor’s fiction as a background to her life, the article will concentrate on the strange portrayal of the heroes of O’Connor’s stories as much as O’Connor herself was an extremely one of a kind individual. Hence, O’Connor will be exemplified as being clarified through her characters, for example, in the story Good Country People. O’Connor was an extraordinary client of moral story in her accounts. As O’Connor in her life was a self observer a large portion of her characters are gregarious, for example, in Good Country People and the character Hulga. Hulga denies herself first in the story by the changing of her name from Joy to Hulga which means O’Connor’s own hatred of falsities. She is expressing through the character Hulga that individuals are inclined to be visually impaired in regions in which they ought to keep the two eyes open. She expresses this concerning occasions in her own life, for example, growing up Catholic in a for the most part Protestant neighborhood. Hulga is heedless to her own character and what she can do and by changing her name she is attempting to revamp her own history. O’Connor as a compose can feel for this idea as through her characters O’Connor is attempting to locate her own personality. O’Connor’s genuine specialty recorded as a hard copy lay with the making of the awful legend. She felt that she herself was a sad legend since she on the double needed to conquer a physical disease just as stay static due to that illness and accordingly not appreciate the world nor demonstrate to the world the abilities of oneself; herself. Her subsequent conviction was that the world is accused of God (Wikipedia). She was proud in her composing style and the ‘grotesque’ characters with which she filled her accounts. Each character of O’Connor’s fiction welcomed on a crucial change for the character. When Hulga changes her name and afterward meets Manly Pointer and experiences a speedy change. The dismissal of the name Joy to the grasp of the name Hulga uncovers for the crowd that Hulga abhors herself yet anticipates that life should be loaded up with frustration and in certainty has been instructed as much from family and neighbors. After gathering Manly Pointer Hulga, Hulga is scornful and considers herself to be better then him whom she portrays as basic and imbecilic yet consents to go on a cookout with him so as to show him a more profound significance to life (Hulga is hung up on anguish and sadomasochistic dreams). Truth be told, Hulga is the person who is uninformed about the world as Manly Pointer exhibits a progression of duping occasions where he entices Hulga and leaves with her wooden leg. This is the place Manly Pointer uncovers his actual self and where the peruser is presented to the genuine Hulga. O’Connor was splendid at perceiving the legitimacy of an individual in key minutes. Hulga must be deprived of her pride so as to be unassuming and perceive a few facts about herself. This parlays to the reality of O’Connor’s ailment and her endeavoring to bode well and allot a type of direction to the malady where she could consider none to be a Catholic hope to consider it a manner by which it permitted herself to stay humble before God. As O’Connor states in Good Country People, Everybody is extraordinary, Mrs. Hopewell said. Indeed, a great many people is, Mrs. Freeman said. It takes different sorts to make the world. I generally said it did myself. (OConnor 181 - 82) Accordingly, O’Connor is embodying that assorted variety is the way in to the delight throughout everyday life and that finding out to the possibility of flawlessness is unconscionable. O’Connor’s specialty in writing was the composition of disaster. This is seen not just when Manly Pointer takes Hulga’s leg and she should sit tight for help up in the tree house. O’Connor needed her characters to be introduced through a polarity of good and awful or through their abilities of viciousness combined with their being moved by divine beauty (Wikipedia). This change at that point is difficult; for Hulga it is pride and the way that she is confronted with her own awkwardness and nation ways. Each character falls in the story, unfortunately and amusingly. Consequently, O’Connor isn't wistful in her accounts which uncovers her very own character attribute; the nonattendance of pity from her life all things considered from her accounts. This plays into the idea of personality which identifies with the greater part of O’Connor’s characters; oneself excursion and the possible finding of the self toward the finish of the excursion regardless of who oneself genuinely is. O’Connor as far as it matters for her drove a shielded life so the subject of an excursion is pervasive in the vast majority of her accounts, particularly in Good Country People. O’Connor jumped at the chance to expound on uprooted individuals since she herself felt strange or even she felt this subject got to reality of mankind quicker than a character that as of now has looked for reclamation toward the start of the story. O’Connor expounded on the excursion the same amount of as she expounded on the transforms of the characters since for O’Connor it was in the difference in character, the change from transgression to requesting pardoning that denoted her life. OWI or Operating While Intoxicated

OWI or Operating While Intoxicated Addiction Alcohol Use Drunk Driving Print OWI or Operating While Intoxicated By Buddy T facebook twitter Buddy T is an anonymous writer and founding member of the Online Al-Anon Outreach Committee with decades of experience writing about alcoholism. For the most part, the acronym that indicates a drunk driving charge depends on the state in which you are driving. Common Drunk Driving Acronyms Depending on the terminology the states lawmakers used when creating their drunk driving laws, the charge could be referred to by the following acronyms:DUI - Driving Under the InfluenceDWI - Driving While IntoxicatedOUI - Operating Under the Influence While ImpairedOVI - Operating a Vehicle While IntoxicatedOWI - Operating While Intoxicated Other acronyms are used to refer to charges related to the severity of the drunken driving charge: ADWI - Aggravated Driving While IntoxicatedDUII-CS - Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants: Controlled SubstancesDUII - Driving Under the Influence of IntoxicantsDWAI - Driving While Ability ImpairedOMVI - Operating a Motor Vehicle While ImpairedOUII - Operating Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor DUI Is the Most Common Term The most common acronym used for drunken driving is DUI, which is used in most states for driving under the influence. States that use the term DWI include Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Texas, and West Virginia. The following terms are used in the states listed below: OWI - Indiana, IowaOUI - Massachusetts, Rhode IslandOVI - OhioDUII - Oregon 10 Things You Should Know About Getting a DUI Some States Use Multiple Terms Some jurisdictions use more than one of the above acronyms to refer to varying levels of severity of the crime and different levels of punishment. For example, some states use DUI to charge someone driving with a blood-alcohol content over the legal limit, but use DWI (driving while impaired) to charge someone who was obviously impaired but not over the legal BAC limit. In the District of Columbia, for example, drivers can be charged with DWI, DUI, and OWI. The DWI charge is for cases where the driver was tested and had a BAC of 0.08 or higher. The police do not have to prove the driver was impaired. Impaired, but Not Legally Drunk A DUI charged in Washington, D.C. usually means there is no proof that the driver had a BAC over the legal limitâ€"perhaps the driver refused a breath testâ€"but other evidence proved that he was impairedâ€"such as field sobriety tests or observations by the arresting officer. A charge of OWI in the District means that the prosecution can prove the driver was driving under the influence of any amount of alcohol but does not have to prove the driver was impaired or legally intoxicated. In D.C., this charge carries the lowest penalties. Intoxication Affects More Than Driving Also, in some jurisdictions, OWI is used in cases in which driving was not involved, but the operator was intoxicated while operating a boat, heavy equipment or carrying out some other function. As lawmakers across the United States begin to deal with the growing problem of drugged drivingâ€"driving under the influence of a drug, illegal or prescriptionâ€"they are rewriting their laws to meet the new challenges. Laws Are Changing Across the U.S. Consequently, some states may come up with a batch of new acronyms to refer to various charges of operating while intoxicated, or they may move toward using more generalized terms to refer to driving while impairedâ€"meaning under the influence of alcohol or drugs. More states may join the majority by using DUIâ€"driving under the influenceâ€"because it could refer to the influence of either alcohol or drugs. It Is a Serious Offense No matter what they call it where you are arrested for impaired driving, it is a serious offense carrying penalties that are increasing in severity across the country, as states continue to try to reduce the number of injuries and deaths on the highways. Whether its called a DUI, DWI or OWI, a conviction for drunken driving will cost you a staggering amount of money, immediately and in the long term. It can also cost you indirectly because it might restrict the jobs you are able to get with a DUI conviction on your record. Do You Know What Drunk Driving Laws Your State Has?

Analysis Of I Heard A Fly Buzz And Do Not Go Gentle...

Death is inevitable. It is unstoppable and unavoidable. One can try to escape its hold, but it will catch eventually. In the poems â€Å"[I Heard a Fly Buzz]† and â€Å"Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night†, by Emily Dickinson and Dylan Thomas respectively, an underlying theme is mortality. While Dickinson uses her poem to explore things about death, Thomas uses his poem to show the inevitability of death. Both poets use poetic devices such as imagery, repetition, and symbolism to show the struggle of life during the capture of death. The poem â€Å"[I Heard a Fly Buzz]† by Emily Dickinson, is a sixteen line poem that consists of four quatrains (groupings of four lines). The poem is of perfect iambic meter, meaning that the lines are divided into two syllable chunks, giving emphasis to the second syllable. The first and third lines in each stanza have eight syllables (iambic tetrameter) and the second and fourth lines each have six syllables (iambic trimester). By giving such a structure to her poem, Dickinson is able to create a smooth, rhythmic feel. When looking at the poem, one can physically see dashes â€Å"-â€Å" throughout, forcing the reader to pause again and again. This is important from Dickinson’s view as it defines her style and gives the poem a stuttery effect. This poem describes the scene and the atmosphere at the moment when someone dies with an unexpected element added in. The speaker starts by mentioning the sound of a fly, which cuts the heaviness and silence in the airShow Mo reRelatedMarketing Mistakes and Successes175322 Words   |  702 PagesHoboken, NJ 07030-5774, (201)748-6011, fax (201)748-6008, website http://www.wiley.com/go/permissions. Hitler s A Totalitarian State - 1690 Words

Many historians claim that Hitler introduced a totalitarian state in Germany in the years between 1933 and 1939. A totalitarian state was defined as a government that promotes the individual to the state and strictly controls all aspects of life by extreme measures. There is no doubt that radical changes occurred as a result of significant decisions made and policies introduced by the party, but there appears to be strong evidence to suggest that their desire for popularity and power was not completely fulfilled. In order for Germany to be considered a completely successful totalitarian state they must achieve the key features of a totalitarian state. The features of a totalitarian state were defined by German historian and political theorist, Carl Friedrichs, as the following six areas; control of the economy, control of opposition, control of the police and armed forces, total control of the media, the use of terror to control the people and control by one party. If the Nazis could not successfully control all of these areas, Germany would not be considered a totalitarian state. In order to assess whether they did, it is necessary to examine all of these factors covering their key points. Many historians believe that the economic crisis of 1929 helped the Nazis to power. The Nazis claimed to have the answer to solving Germany’s economic problems, so it was important for them that this was shown to be true. The most important was the problem of unemployment. The Wizard of Oz Free Essays

The Wizard of Oz Question: Do you think The Wizard of Oz provided Americans with the hope that their dreams could come true, or do you think that the movie might have made Americans even more upset with their own reality? Every human being faces their own demons and troubles. We try to escape them – some do it through their own battles, but most of us just want to forget, even if it is for a little while. After our moment in paradise is over, we can face our burdens with a new strength provided by escapism. We will write a custom essay sample on The Wizard of Oz or any similar topic only for you Order Now Movies, books, music, poetry and art were just a few ways for artists to express themselves and for the audience to get lost in. This audience mostly consisted of middle-class average Americans, who worked hard and long. Escapism was very popular during the time of the Great Depression in the US. During the day people would work hard for their money, fight for their survival and try to keep their heads up through all of the difficulties, but during the evening they would scatter around town just to find someplace to relax. Most Americans would go around town and search for folks with similar interests. People would always love to go to bars and have a few drinks, exchange stories and laugh. The motion pictures, though, have always been a silent awe – sitting there and enjoying the entertainment unfold before your eyes was pretty magical, even for our day and time in the 21st century. The Wizard of Oz was a hit movie that came out in 1939. The light colorful drawings and the flamboyant set kept the viewers satisfied and yearning for more. Since it was one of the first movies with color, it was quite the success. The special effects in the delightful motion picture kept the audience growing bigger and bigger. Special effects were used in the movie quite often, which seem pretty silly to our 21st century technologically advanced brains, but in fact seemed very impressive at the time. Because of all these technical improvements from the previous movies and taking a few steps forward in development, the film was also one of the most expensive made at the time. Produced by Lions Gate Entertainment, the movie cost an awful lot for the Great Depression era – about 2 million dollars. The motion picture paid off its large bill in time, even if it wasn’t as big of a hit at first. Because of its light theme and enjoyable melodies, the musical soon gained its place in the media. To us now, the movie seems a bit too dramatically done and very silly, but at that time it was really wonderful. The lightly careless way it just swept up your thoughts and mind was amazing, it kept the audience’s attention for the whole show. Forgetting your daily life was now much easier, especially because of the catchy tunes in songs. Lyrics were very simple and fitting, the actors dramatic enough to keep it entertaining but not worrisome. The obnoxious way Dorothy was portrayed may seem very annoying to us now, but during the Great Depression era it was very amusing and quite fitting. Due to the actors being very talented and skillful, the film was enjoyable. Even if The Wizard of Oz has absolutely nothing to do with the Great Depression, it has an implied meaning suitable for all times. All of the characters went on searching for something more, but in the end realized that what they were looking for was with them all along. A great disappointment at the end of the film might seem the Great Wizard. He happens to be a fellow man from Kansas, just like Dorothy. That symbolizes how simple and modest even the best of things can be. By processing this information of hidden meanings, the audience slowly learned from the movies they watched. They began to realize certain values in life, began to see things differently. â€Å"That’s a horse of a different color† says the guard of Emerald City once Dorothy arrives, and now that quote is very fitting. Even if the audience didn’t look deep enough into the characters to find the hidden meanings and ideas, it was still a very entertaining film. Its simplicity and the humorous story truly did help the average American with escapism. The movie has a charismatic effect on its viewers, making it very hard not to sing along or at least laugh at the characters. It swept you away from the first minutes of song and special effects. Musicals always have the effect of moving the audience’s emotions. Due to the color change once Dorothy arrives to Munchkin Land, the movie is quite breathtaking for those times. The Great Depression was most definitely affected by movies like this; they made people’s lives easier and more bearable. Now the demons and troubles Americans faced came easier, since entertainment served as a distraction. How to cite The Wizard of Oz, Papers

Question: Discuss about the Operations and Production Management Systems. Answer: Introduction Operations entail all the activities needed to form and deliver an organizations goods or services to its customers. In our case operational management has been used to determine how well Hawkesbury Company satisfies the needs of the customers. The mission of the operations function will be expressed in terms of productivity, profit and competitiveness between products. Logistics in production enhances the careful use of resources thus management failed to include logistics in the company operations; this resulted to the wastage and mismanagement of resources. The production system comprises both the technology used, division of labor and information flow. The fact that the customer is price sensitive and strict on delivery time increases the pressure to the manufacturing firm. However despite the nature of increased efficiency in the manufacture of a kitchen cabinet, the products sales have outgrown that of the standard kitchen and volume capacity in the firm as well. The improvemen t of the system to produce a unique model has led to increasing in productivity and increase in sales volume. The direct responsibilities of Mei as the manager are portrayed where he critically examines the tradition of manufacturing and identify the need for customers opinion to meet his/her needs. Modernized production systems The aspect of changing nature of the operations in Hawkesbury Cabinet Pty ltd has been discussed in the case study where the traditional manufacturing processes are put aside to give way for modernized methods characterized with highly specialized machinery which increase the operations efficiency. The manufacture of standardized kitchens has more costs incurred which leads to a decline in profitability of the company hence Mei have decided to focus on unique designs according to client specifications. Mellvin (1994) states that new design produces greater revenue and has the largest production capacity compared with standard k due to the introduction of new skills in designing. The customers accept the unique model and methodology of manufacturing adopted by the company. There are inevitable circumstances of which leads to increase in pressure due to the nature of the client known as specs builders. Division of power The company designs and manufacturers kitchen cabinets and belong to Fung and Mei , the two owners distributed managerial responsibilities and some of the duties they had to fulfill include; managing of the operation process, improvement of the system, embracing design, planning, control and operations in strategy, formal identification of roles. Earlier before the recent production changes the company had focused entirely on custom made kitchens where clients were given the opportunity to consult with Mei for a unique design specifically for the individuals. Production processes The company uses high quality general purpose machines to provide the kind of flexible products that the clients desire of a wide variety of custom designed cabinets. The process of painting is done on the fully assembled cabinets in an assembly area that is well controlled in the rear of the facility. The final process of finishing is done in the same area as the painting and as a reason growth has become large and a continuous process. Winslow (2002) said the existence of varying tastes and preferences of the potential buyers keep the producers on suspense. Fung and Mei became more and more popular with their client base becoming more and more diverse because of the good reputation out of their quality goods and high performance levels. Fung holds the position of a master cabinet maker whereas Mei competencies are that of an interior designer. Through over time, Fung duties had evolved due to the increasing capacity of the company and the rising needs, this led to a new role assign ed to him in the position of production and operations manager. Mei has always had an interest in the overall managerial of the company which comprised of the financial activities. Inadequacy in resources such as machinery equipment The use of same equipment for both the custom made cabinets and the same crafts people led to competing on the same processing time with the limited machinery to work with. This resulted in the waiting period to increase for completion of one task and overall contributes to partially completed jobs. The effect of the new builders on the Hawkesbury operations is that pressure in processing due to a reduction in time spent in manufacturing. This is enhanced to meet client deadline since the builders kitchen were becoming increasingly important and popular in the market. Revenue and profit made by the company The builders kitchen contributed 60% of the companys volume and 75% of the revenue generated by the company in total. The rest 40% volume in production capacity was for the standardized kitchens and the revenue generated was 25%. The financial effect of the builders kitchen would be an increase in profit made in producing the builders line of kitchens. Strict requirements and high standards of performance The total output of Hawkesbury Cabinet Pty Ltd and manufactures- custom built kitchen is not sufficient for supply to all the builders thus the company sales has to increase, however the company had been signing low volume contracts to specs builders although they maintained a good standard. This results in a reduction in the limited range of batches being made into smaller batches. These specifications of batches lied between single kitchen up to five kitchens of the given qualities or specifications made. Another challenge encountered was that of Stringent delivery requirements by the client builders who were also price sensitive than custom- made price buyers. Multitasking Friedrick (2003) Multitasking of the two activities of manufacturing the kitchen cabinets and the custom designed cabinets which were being carried out at the same time in a manufacturing facility. The single facility cannot accommodate a higher production level due to inadequate resources unless it is enlarged. Re-scheduling Regular scheduling has been witnessed due to sales of the builders lines increasing. Prioritizing over the cabinet kitchen led to abandoning of the standard cabinets to leap a higher benefit from the higher sales and profit margins. Edward (2001) argues that Wastage in the company has been an issue where the components of the standard kitchen are scattered all over in the manufacturing firm as more attention is paid to various production departments Partial work was done The company does not utilize the resources efficiently and minimizing the cost of production is neglected in this case. Costs associated with the company standard builders increased steadily as a result of the non-utilizing the resources. Champy (1999) states that excess money could have been used in production processes in the firm tied up in the material inventory, finished goods and work in progress. Stock holding costs and other stock-age costs became rampant due to the excess inventory that the company had incurred and thus hired a new warehouse in the nearby. Standard and custom orders faced the challenge of pro longed lead time for a number of days. This led to the delay of the promised deliveries and longer time was spent to deliver the orders. Mei the general manager was disturbed by the prolonged delay of the orders because he had a role to play in the responsible management of the company. He faced challenges dealing with the clients who had made new orders to the company . The issue of increased volume work in the process led to a tremendous change in the previously well-organized manufacturing area to into a factory which was clogged up with work partially completed. Burnetas (2001) said that the manufacturing capacity of the firm was put to the limit due to the current operations systems of lagged production and hence no space left for further expansion of the business. Conclusion The two partners have to obtain knowledge of the global trends in the field of supply chain management in order to meet customer ever changing demands. The company has to encompass logistics in its operations to reduce wastage. The logistics will ensure that standard cabinet components which are left lying partially uncompleted work are well accounted for and carefully used. The customer expectations have skyrocketed; new experts in the field of design with more creativity to provide the client with the expected standards are to be hired. The operations management is an integral position of the above company hence there are areas where operations functions and the skills of an effective operational manger are strongly tied to the organizations lasting success. To counter the issue of increased volume of work the company has to hire new personnel and buy machinery and apply technology that will assist in reducing the partial work into completed work. They must configure a product syst em which will be most efficient and affective for the overall improvement in designs and processes. Free Essays on Fire Safety At The Ocean Deck

The Ocean Deck Bar and Restaurant is a staple in the Daytona Beach community. Located on the beach at 127 South Ocean Avenue, the ocean deck provides many customers with an exciting array of food, drink and activities. Other than the social atmosphere at this Caribbean themed restaurant, Fire protection is also on the priority list of its proprietors. The Ocean Deck is a 2 story structure whose primary building material is wood. The upstairs primarily serves as a restaurant while the downstairs serves it’s purpose as a full bar and entertainment area, including a stage for karaoke and bands and a dance floor. During the warmer times of the year, the ocean facing doors of the bar and restaurant are opened to allow for its customers to enjoy the beach while enjoying the facilities. There are five (5) exits spread throughout the building, which provide an easy route for escape in case of an emergency. All exits are properly marked and are kept unobstructed by employees of the establishment nightly. The exits are also well lit, and are supplied with only outward swinging doors to make exiting the building as easy as possible. After speaking with Robert Bergen, an employee of the Ocean Deck’s night shift, we found that fire emergencies are not to be handled by the employees. The employees are informed where to direct patrons in a time of an emergency. They are also knowledgeable in the location of handheld fire extinguishers and manual alarm system actuators. Robert also informed us that during the night shift, when the bar is mostly crowded, the employees must take extra caution due to the fact that many patrons have been consuming alcoholic beverages, which can hinder their ability to act responsibly in the event of an emergency. (Bergen, 2004) To make the Ocean Deck safer and more enjoyable they have put into place, a 177 person maximum occupancy. Although this limit is effective, overcrowding can still become a ... Importance of Health Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Importance of Health - Essay Example The research paper â€Å"Importance of Health† highlights the importance of the level of health care and the ethics of nursing care in patients’ treatment. The aim of nursing is to maintain well-being by prevention of injuries and avoidance of illnesses. A healthy citizenry is the primary aim of any government public health program. On the other hand, there are many resource constraints which can prevent the government from giving a much-needed help for health care to everyone of its citizens. This paper discusses the many ways by which the nursing profession can also do its part as a crucial member of the health care team. It is always a good mindset to not rely on the government in all instances, such as in health care. There are clearly limits to what the government can do, given its limited budget and also the very bureaucratic nature of governance; help may not be forthcoming at all or it might get delayed. In particular, this paper looks at how changing demographi cs has increased the number of elderly citizens in most countries today. This group of people is the most vulnerable of all, in terms of access to health care, financial resources, and the onset of many age-related ailments or diseases. Older or senior citizens therefore require special attention because of these factors. The overall aging (graying) of society is not confined to just a few countries. Advances in medical or scientific knowledge also contributed to longer lifespans, so there are now more older people. Most senior citizens are parents and grandparents, with families of their own and many offspring who love them for their warmth, wisdom, and accumulated knowledge. Their impact on the overall community is their presence gives younger people and families a certain sense of importance and continuity in terms of inter-generational relationships. The importance of them staying healthy is that the community can exert effort on more productive activities and not get tied down to caring for them and spending financial resources for their medication and treatment. To stay healthy is to save precious dollars which impacts positively on the whole community. The primary responsibility for senior group health is on the members of their own family who have to take care of them and provide for their material

Supervision Mnagement Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Supervision Mnagement - Essay Example The supervisors or the line managers are more important in organization’s today because they are the ones that directly interact with the employees (Thornhill & Saunders, 1998). To what extent leaders and managers in the hospitality units are able to achieve their goals will be critically analysed here. Performance management requires the evaluation of contemporary theories of human psychology and their application to performance of individuals at work place. According to Brownell (2003), communication is the most vital tool for a manager for improving individual and organizational performance. The hospitality industry is service oriented and service is synonymous with effective communication. It thus becomes important for managers to make their messages clear, to maintain and develop positive relationships with both customers and employees. Performance management requires the managers to ensure that employees’ activities and output are congruent with organizational goals. They need to set standards, assess result and plan for improvement (Schermerhorn et al., 2004 cited by Gross, 2007). A good performance management system can help to reduce turnover, increase productivity, improve individual performance, improve morale, reduce conflict and eliminate gaps and overlaps. In evaluating performance and objective evaluation method should be employed which should be able to pinpoint the areas where improvement is needed. An efficient system can also help to identify the superior workers in the organization. Workers’ participation leads to commitment and improved morale. While supervisory leadership is essential, the supervisor must be able to work together as a team. An effective reward system should be linked to how well each worker meets the performance standards. Since the hospitality industry is volatile and the services have to be changed with the customer demands, it lays stress on the employees. Hence an annual performance appraisal is not

Education reform in the United States

Education reform in the United States Yasmine Calderon Education Education reform in the United States is a primary goal for Congress to assist students excel and gain knowledge to survive in the growing and competitive work force. As the United States was once the leading example of Education reform, it is now 12th among other developed nations. The need for incentive programs in classrooms to prepare students for the future of higher education is in high demand. Ensuring students the future of a college education and maintaining a successful job is key to rebuilding the economy and securing bright futures for individuals. Suggested policy implementations include reforms of existing school policies, budget analysis, statistics and facts, and current stances toward the public policy. One of President Obama’s bold incentives to improve teaching and learning in the classrooms that instruct policies and strategies to achieve the goal of college readiness. To date, President Obama has opted 4 billion dollars to 19 states that help to address key areas of education reform. States serve 22 million students and employ 1.5 billion teachers in 42,000 schools representing the 45 percent of all K-12 students and 42 percent of all low income students nationwide. Setting a precedent for the future of young Americans through the Race to the Top program will help those who are challenged change policies and laws to create better college and career ready standards. (Source: www.whitehouse.gov/issues) As states begin to move progressively with education reforms the No Child Left Behind Act imposed by former President George W. Bush left five years of reauthorization overdue. States have been lowering their standards in classrooms by punishing failure over success and fitting everyone into a one-size-fits-all deal. While President Obama has issued a blueprint, Reform of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, for his incentive Congress has yet to act upon it leaving schools flexible with the law. Passing the law would then set a higher standard for high schools to achieve college readiness and careers. For states to receive that flexibility they must reward and recognize those states that make exceptionally well performance and gains while also tending to those who need help in the lowest performing schools. Under the new law states will develop and propose new plans to help improve outcomes for those groups who pose a threat in a large educational gap. Unlike the one-size-fits -all deal left from the NCLB Act states and districts can improve strategies and resources that will meet the need for student performance. Issuing more reforms for education includes the president calling for improvements to help students gain interest in math, science, engineering and technology. The Obama Administration has reached several successful STEM initiatives that includes combining it with Race to the Top and investing into the Innovation Fund while also implementing new STEM educators called Teacher Corps to further progress students in the path of a successful career. The Teacher Corps will start with a basis of 50 teachers among 50 sites and expand to 10,000 teachers over the next four years. The Obama Administration will launch the Teacher Corps with $1 billion allocated from the President’s 2013 budget request currently before Congress. Along with the President’s education reforms, the Education Amendments Act of 1972 authorized the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare to improve postsecondary education opportunities that include providing assistance to educational institutions and agencies for a broad range of reforms and innovations. The role of the bureaucracy has been otherwise noted a major debate in shaping educational performance. Proponents argue that large educational bureaucracies have contributed to shortfalls in performance in America’s public schools. Others view it as beneficial because they manage a wide range of problems that make it easier for teachers to focus on the core of teaching. The federal government totaled an amount of $141 billion on education in the 2014 fiscal year. While calculating that number is challenging, federal programs that are administered by the U.S. Department of Education appear in two separate parts of the budget and other agencies have administered large programs as well. Further measuring spending is not a straightforward deal and the government provides subsidies towards higher education in the form of tax benefits. The $141 billion figure includes annual appropriation for the U.S. Dept. of Education, spending for the department’s annual appropriations that are not subject (i.e. mandatory spending), school meal programs, the Head Start program, revenue and spending on education tax benefits for individuals and military and veterans education benefits. Since the federal government spent a total of $3.5 trillion in the 2013 fiscal year which means the $141 billion spent accounts for 4 percent of the entire federal budget. (Sources: New America Foundation; U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, Agriculture, Defense, Veterans Afffairs, White House Office of Management and Budget; Congressional Budget Office.) According to the Heritage Foundation, a conservative policy research organization and interest group, a budget presented by House Budget Committee chairmen Paul Ryan (R—Wis.) would provide $74 billion on education spending, training, employment, and social services. The Ryan budget seeks to â€Å"remove regulatory barriers to higher education that act to restrict flexibility and innovative teaching, particularly as it relates to non-traditional models such as online coursework.† Policymakers who support to enable states to have more control over college costs and futures should implement the budget. Just last year Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) and Senators Mark Udall (D-CO) and Michael Bennet (D-CO) introduced the â€Å"Growth to Excellence Act† that would include rigorous college-and-career ready standards. A bill that would surely receive support from educational advocates. The bill is sure to represent a strong step towards providing students in America with outstanding education that will bring a forefront to the future of these individuals. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the United States fails to educate students and prepare them for the future to come which leaves critical time for officials to address the situation. Statistics include: A recent report by ACT, a non-profit testing organization, found that only 22 percent of U.S. high school students met â€Å"college ready† standards in all of their core subjects; figures even lower for African Americans and Hispanics. The College Board reported that even among college-bound seniors, only 43 percent met college-ready standards, meaning that more college students need to take remedial courses. While according to U.S. News and World Report, nationwide the number of high school graduates is expected to grow 10 percent in the next 10 years. The northeastern states will experience declines in growth, while high school grads will grow by 24 percent in Texas and Florida. According to the Lawlor Group, trends such as demography, the power of perception, and measurement determine aspects of higher education as seen below: College enrollments will shrink from 38% to 10% over the next 8 years. High school graduates will decrease in all but 18 states in 2019. Mostly in the South you will see an increase. Most students tend to attend a college with less than $11,100 in tuition fees and think it should cost no more than $20,000. (Sources: NCES, College Board, Gallup, Federal Student Aid, Harvard Institute of Politics.) The future of American education is critical to students and individuals who want to maintain a college education. The path of every student along with a sustainable approach would benefit the economy as well. Proposed solutions such as Race to the Top, revisions of the No Child Left Behind act and the STEM program would help to further alleviate the problems posed to higher education. Of course with solutions comes fiscal responsibilities which would introduce a need for a new education budget that would most likely benefit the future of American students. A time for reform is now and policies should be implemented as soon as possible to ensure the livelihood of students and their path to a successful life.

Gender Discrimination Essay

All around the world, genders are being discriminated by the opposite gender. The question is†¦ How will we stop it? This issue is a huge problem and if we become aware of this, we can work together to stop these hateful acts in our country. The thing is, we all know that it is wrong but we have continued to do it for years. It is unlawful to harass a person because of their sex. Harassment can include â€Å"sexual harassment† or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. (Sex Discrimination Harrassment) Thejustlife. rg website states that women get 77 cents per every dollar earned by men. It may not seem like that big of a difference but if a man gets $100,000 a year then a woman with the same job is getting only $77,000 a year. It makes a difference when you look at it from a different perspective. The same website also states that 29 percent of households led by single females are below the poverty level, as compared with just 12 percent of households led by single males. This means that more women in the United States are likely to be in poverty. Also, they state that Women and girls make up 75% of the poorest people in the world today. For example, of the poorest 10% of the population in Guatemala, 75% are women. I know this isn’t in our country, but if it is happening all over the world, it could happen anywhere. Also, nearly four in 10 girls reported being made fun of because they are a girl, compared to under one in ten for boys. (Gender Discrimination in Education) Monetary discrimination is just as much of a problem as sexual discrimination. Now, we could look at the facts all day or we could just imagine what is right. It doesn’t necessarily take facts to believe what is wrong. Think about it. Do women deserve the disrespect that they are getting right now all around the world, just because they are girls, have longer hair, or even just talk â€Å"girly†? We are all unique in our own ways and we should respect everyone even though they might be a little weird. In most schools, if not all, the teachers or some sort of adult teach you to respect each other for who they are and to treat others like you want to be treated. When we are told this, we all think that we will do it for the rest of our lives and that we will never disrespect anyone ever again. If this was really true, here wouldn’t be such a big problem all around our world about gender discrimination. In CREW class we are learning about drunk driving and this is a great real life example. We all think we are never going to drink and drive, but then there might be a huge party where you might make bad decisions. After that, you might have to drive home and then you get in a crash so then there is a dri nking and driving problem just like gender discrimination has become a problem too. We need a solution to this problem and I think the best one would be to let people know in general. If the United States realizes that the problem is such a big issue they is a better chance that we will do something about it. If we start one more campaign in every state, that might help two women in every state which means we will help one hundred women from being discriminated against in the United States. It does seem like much, but if a state realizes how they helped out, they might make more campaigns. It would be like a real life chain of helping people and happiness. In conclusion, gender discrimination is a world wide problem and if we remove the issue from out country, we would be doing our world a great service.

Fashion Show

A fashion show is an event put on by a fashion designer to showcase his or her upcoming line of clothing during Fashion Week. Fashion shows debut every season, particularly the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter seasons. This is where the latest fashion trends are made. The two most influential fashion weeks are Paris Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week, which are both semiannual events. Types of fashion The garments produced by clothing manufacturers fall into three main categories, although these may be split up into additional, more specific categories:Haute couture Until the 1950s, fashion clothing was predominately designed and manufactured on a made-to-measure or haute couture basis , with each garment being created for a specific client. A couture garment is made to order for an individual customer, and is usually made from high-quality, expensive fabric, sewn with extreme attention to detail and finish, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques. Look and fit take pri ority over the cost of materials and the time it takes to make. For Example Ready-to-wear (pret-a-porter) Ready-to-wear clothes are a cross between haute couture and mass market. They are not made for individual customers, but great care is taken in the choice and cut of the fabric. Clothes are made in small quantities to guarantee exclusivity, so they are rather expensive. Ready-to-wear collections are usually presented by fashion houses each season during a period known as Fashion Week. This takes place on a city-wide basis and occurs twice a year.
